FOR CHILDREN & ADOLESCENTS

WHAT IS PLAY THERAPY?
Based upon the fact that play is the child’s natural medium of self expression, play therapy is an opportunity which is given to the child to ‘play out’ his feelings and problems just as in certain types of adult therapy an individual ‘talks out’ his difficulties. — Virginia Axline

WHY PLAY THERAPY?
Play Therapy is a powerful tool to address the cognitive, behavioral & emotional challenges in children. In sessions, I utilize both approaches to play therapy:
1. NON-DIRECTIVE PLAY THERAPY is based on the principle that children can resolve their own issues given the right conditions and the freedom to play with limited instruction and supervision.
2. DIRECTIVE PLAY THERAPY uses more input from the therapist to help speed up results. Play therapists use both approaches, depending on the circumstances.

EMDR Therapy is a type of therapy that helps us get unstuck from problems or stressful experiences like anxiety, anger, family changes, medical problems, losing a person or a pet,, etc.

EMDR helps resolve troubling thoughts and feelings related to distressing memories so that children can return to their normal developmental tasks and prior levels of coping. In addition, EMDR can help to strengthen feelings of confidence, calmness and mastery.

For children the DAS (Dual Attention Stimulation) will include the child doing two things at one time. Child therapists get creative in their back and forth movements and may include musical instruments, expressive arts, puppets, nerf bats or the use of TheraTappers that vibrate back and forth.
